Each week until nominations close on the 29th June we will be showcasing two award categories from the Town Awards. This week we will be focusing on Young Person of the Year Award & Teacher/Youth Leader of the Year Award.

Young Person of the Year Award

Awarded to a young person (21 years or under) who deserves either recognition for their achievements or recognition for their determination in the face of adversity

Councillor Barry Humphreys MBE said “We have some very talented young people in Stowmarket who provide inspiration to others, either through the outstanding nature of their achievements, or because they have triumphed in the face of adversity. We recognise that such young people are the future of the town and through this award, we wish to acknowledge the positive contributions that they are already making”.

This year the Young Person of the Year Award is Sponsored by Cabbages and Kings. Cabbages and Kings are previous winners of the Local Business of the Year Award 2016/17.

Dave Hannah from Cabbages and Kings said ‘At Cabbages & Kings 100% of our profit goes to support young people across Stowmarket and Mid Suffolk and so it was a bit of a ‘no brainer’ for us to sponsor the Award. 70% of our staff team are under the age of 24 and we believe in young people, all young people, and any opportunity for them to be supported and celebrated for being who they are, is worth being a part of.

We know the difference winning Local Business of the Year two years ago, made to us, and so we can imagine how it will feel for someone to win the Young Person of the Year Award. To be honest though we also hope that the Award will be more than just one award for one person. We also hope that it helps to change the story some people believe about young people.’
