The Pride of Stowmarket Award is awarded to an individual or organisation who has made an outstanding and continuing contribution to civic or community life over a period of not less than 5 years.

Councillor Nick Gowrley said “Some people just keep on giving to the town through their support of local good causes or contribution to civic life. We would like these outstanding people to know how proud we are of the contributions that they have made. Therefore, we have created an award category called ‘Pride of Stowmarket’ for those who have provided excellent and unstinting service to the local community over a period of not less than five years.”

The Lions Club of Stowmarket and District are sponsoring this year’s Pride of Stowmarket Award. Tony Wass representing The Lions Club of Stowmarket and District said ” We were established in 1980, has over 40 members and has expanded to be one of the largest clubs in the UK. The Club is part of Lions Clubs International, the largest service organisation in the world with over 46000 clubs worldwide and 1.4 million members. Lions worldwide recently celebrated their centenary 1917- 2017.

Lion Chris Philpot, one of Stowmarket’s Founder members, represented the Stowmarket branch at the Centenary Reception at Buckingham Palace on February 28th 2018, together with members from across the British Isles and the organisations’ charity partners, hosted by the Lions’ Patron, HRH, The Countess of Wessex.  Members of Stowmarket Lions interact with the local community and are active in raising funds throughout the year. A recent boxing dinner raised £11,000 and our Santa Sleigh, which tours the town at Christmas raised £8,000. In the past year Stowmarket and District Lions Club raised over £50,000 to enable us to distribute direct to those in need in our community. These funds support local organisations, groups and individuals and local Charities and Hospices.

The Club holds its business meetings at the Cedars Hotel Stowmarket on the first Thursday of every month and have a social evening for members once a month.”
